Equine Assisted Activities

Through Crotched Mountain's Equine Collaborative, people of all abilities can experience the benefits of working with horses. Activities such as grooming, leading and riding can help individuals improve physical conditioning, gross and fine motor skills and cognitive abilities. For some, being in the presence of a gentle horse offers a safe environment for learning how to build a trusting relationship. For others, horses provide a motivating tool for learning and personal growth.

Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic riding is an activity in which the participant sits astride a horse and learns a variety of riding skills. Participants must be able to sit independently, mount via a mounting block and/or ramp and weigh no more than 180 pounds. Therapeutic riding promotes improvements in a number of physical, cognitive and psychological skills; including strength, endurance, motor planning, sequencing, self-awareness and self-esteem.

Hippotherapy refers to a physical, occupational or speech therapy treatment session that utilizes the movement of the horse to facilitate therapeutic outcomes. The word hippotherapy derives from the Greek word hippos, meaning horse. Clinicians with specialized training use the movement and sensory input of the horse to address participants' impairments and functional limitations. During hippotherapy sessions at Crotched Mountain an occupational therapist will work on designated functional goals and objectives, taken directly from the IEP or developed specifically for hippotherapy sessions.

Therapeutic Horse Experience (THE)

THE offers children and adults the opportunity to interact with horses through groundwork. Activities include grooming, petting, leading, learning parts of the horse, painting horses, bathing and other horse-related experiences. Therapeutic benefits include building gross and fine motor skills, improving cognitive skills, socialization and building confidence.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)

EAL is an experiential learning opportunity that builds academic skills, life skills and developmental asses for individuals with behavioral or cognitive challenges. Our integrated approach combines a classroom curriculum with ground work activities centered around the horse in a natural environment.
