A Caring, Personalized Learning Environment for Children with Autism

Crotched Mountain School provides a caring, personalized learning environment for children and young adults ages 4-21 with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Our staff has specialized training and years of experience working with students with autism who have serious medical conditions and/or significant behaviors. Because every child is unique, we design an individualized program for each student. Learning takes place in the context of trusting, respectful and authentic relationships. We combine the principles of ABA with a Gentle Teaching philosophy, which upholds the dignity of students and teachers.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach

Our approach for children with ASD focuses on social and emotional development as well as building communicative, behavioral, academic, motor and independent living skills. Each student receives a personalized treatment plan based on input from parents, care providers, the student's school district and our own careful assessment. We use multidisciplinary, evidence-based strategies in our classrooms and across the Crotched Mountain School campus including:

  • Gentle Teaching - which uses gentle presence, rather than punishment, to build trusting relationships with students who struggle with communication and express their frustrations through self-injury and/or aggression. Students become active participants in their daily lives through the shared experience in the trusting relationship that has been built. Through the active engagement in daily flows, students gain independence in their life.
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) - provides some of the principles of our instruction. Students learn functional skills, how to develop social competence and how to establish emotional regulation under the supervision of a special education classroom teacher with consult by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Older students benefit from a multitude of opportunities to acquire lifelong vocational skills, both on our campus and in the community.
  • Personalized sensory diets - overseen by Crotched Mountain School's occupational therapists, help students relax, regroup and refocus during a busy day.

Classrooms designed specifically for children with autism feature special lighting and sound-absorbing materials to limit distraction. Students can take breaks by reading and relaxing in quiet rooms, or in motor gyms equipped with sensory swings, trampolines and therapy ball.

We Find a Strategy for Every Child

Learning happens when there is a trusting relationship between staff and students. Our holistic approach helps determine the underlying cause of challenging behaviors so children with autism can participate fully in learning and life. Crotched Mountain School teachers, therapists and medical specialists work closely with parents and caregivers to provide consistent support to our students. We don't give up until we find a strategy that works with each child.
